Offroad Running Routes
We have many customers and visitors to the shop asking about good routes to run locally, so this year we will be highlighting and sharing some beautiful routes here on our website.
There will be a great mix to pick from; short to long, flat to hilly and a bit of everything in between.
In addition, throughout the year will be heading out on a number of these routes. As well as having a good time each run will have purpose and we will link up with some of the brands we work with to give you the opportunity to try out great products during the run.
Whether you are looking to get off road, push on from park run, freshen up your weekly runs or add some route knowledge to the mix, check out below.
Kicking of this year we have chosen a favourite, a route which got the honour of being the basis of our first competition - conquer Caburn.
Mount Caburn sits in its own little realm of the Lewes Downs a lovely space of hillside that offers a great variation in scenery as the seasons come and go with splendid views day and night in all directions (weather permitting!) Separated on one side from the South downs by Lewes town and the A27 and enclosed in the other direction by Glynde and Ringmer it makes a great option for finding escape from the roads for runners in these locations.
Please click on the image for the route in OS Maps.
The route follows right of way paths and well-trodden trails through accessible land.
Starting at the bottom of Chapel Hill in Lewes, you will head pass the golf club, keeping the golfcourse to your left you will head up to Saxon Down before heading south toward and then onto Mount Caburn itself. Take time at the top to take in the views before returning via Oxteddle Bottom and back down Chapel Hill, finishing at the War Memorial at the top of the High Street.
If you follow exactly from start to finish it is just shy of 8km with 278m of ascent.
Before heading out for a run or walk please satisfy yourself of your fitness, if in doubt of your fitness please consult a health professional before any activity.
Please make sure you have everything you need for your time out on the trail such as appropriate footwear, clothing, hydration, snacks and a phone to get you around. Consider waterproofs when its wet and sun protection when its warm – on a clear day the downs are exposed and offer little shade and layers for when its cold.
If you need any advice on the above please drop into the shop or give us a call and will be more than happy to give advice.
Please watch your step and be mindful conditions under foot vary, particular with changes in weather.
Naturally please respect the land much of which is working farmland by keeping to the trails, paying attention to notices, leaving no trace - do not litter; respect other land users, animals and fauna and always close gates behind you.
If you’re out with your bestie Woofy pal please make sure they are always under control as a considerable amount of the land is working farm and there will likely be sheep, cows or even ponies around.
And most importantly… Enjoy!
